In this article we will discuss about the feed and water that should be provides to chicks.

Feed for Chick:

High quality balanced feeds should be provided to the chicks through purchasing or farm preparation. Starter feed (up to 8 weeks of age), grower feed (9 to 16 weeks of age) and layer feed (17 to 72 weeks of age) manufactured by reputed institutions/ companies should be used. BIS (Bureau of Indian Standards) recommended feed formulae and specifications are available.

With proper knowledge/experience, the feed can be prepared on the farm itself. The feed should be stored in clean, dry and well ventilated room. If the feed remains wet it may cause fungus infection. Properly designed feeders (Fig. 5.24) should he used. Now various well- constructed feeders are available in market. Careful observation should be made before selecting the appropriate feeder so that the rats do not waste feed.

Adequate feeding space should be provided per bird. More space is required as the chick grows in age. Proper records should be kept on feed consumption per bird for each batch. About 7 kg feed up to 20 weeks and 38 kg feed from 21 to 72 weeks of age is required. Excess utilization may be due to feed wastage by rats, low temperature of shed or poor feed quality (low energy feed). Too low feed consumption may be due to disease condition, low quality/ unpalatability feed and high temperature in poultry shed.

Water for Chicks:

Always fresh and clean drinking water should be provided. Water should always be available to chicks. Use of properly designed watering equipment (Fig. 5.25) is helpful. Several beautifully designed water pot for chicks are available in the market.

ADVERTISEMENTS:

Water-pots should always be kept clean, Drinking pots should be such that the birds do not fall into it. Cool water to be provided during summer.
